Portable Applicance Testing (or PAT Testing for short) is an obligation you have as an employer for the safety of your employees.
In some businesses, this safety obligation is obviously extended towards anyone else who might be using portable electrical equipment on your premises, for example in an hotel.
In short, you need to have a periodic inspection and test carried out on portable electrical equipment in the workplace. The results of the tests need to be recorded, and each piece of equipment needs to be clearly marked as tested, pass or fail.
There are three pieces of legislation which apply:
The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment regulations 1992 and 1998
So, if you've got kettles, printers, anything with an electrical plug... it needs to be inspected and tested.
